GreenIQ flow meter

GreenIQ releases flow meters

GreenIQ has released a flow meter to keep tabs on your watering habits and detect possible problems. Flow meters send data back to a sprinkler controller through a wire after being connected in-line to an irrigation pipe.

GreenIQ’s flow meter connects to its WiFi sprinkler controller, also called the Smart Garden Hub. The meter reports gallons of water used to the controller, making the data available in the GreenIQ app. The meter also helps you keep tabs on leaks, pipe breaks and slow water flow by alerting you through the app.

The meter comes in two sizes, 3/4″ ($54) and 1″ ($76) and in two standards, NPT for USA/Canada and BSP for Europe/Australia/Japan/Israel.

THOUGHTS

A flow meter is a crucial component to make your smart garden smarter. Until you have a sensor on your pipe, you really don’t know how much water you are using — and possibly wasting. A slow leak can waste thousands of gallons water without anyone realizing it. And knowing that your pipes are not flowing as fast as they should be is also good, actionable information.

But installing a flow meter is a lot easier BEFORE you’ve got your irrigation system in the ground. I have a run of pipe that goes under my house and is easy to get to, so I could splice a flow sensor there. But I’m guessing it would be a mess for most people to dig out their system and splice in the meter.
